MTSU and Cogeneration

When the coal burning heating plant that served the campus for many years was in need of either repair or replacement, the University took a big step forward into energy efficiency when it decided to build a power plant utilizing cogeneration,

The cogeneration facility at MTSU supports the campus by providing 5 megawatts of the 10 to 12 megawatts of the electrical energy needed to run the campus. The cogeneration process provides thermal energy in the form of steam, as well as electricity, and has significantly reduced campus emissions levels produced by the old coal generated heat and steam to the new natural gas system.
