Our History Middle Tennessee State University, a co-educational, tax-supported institution, located in the heart of Tennessee, Murfreesboro, opened in 1911 with a 2-year teacher-training program, evolved into a 4-year college in 1925, and attained university status in 1965. MTSU consists of 5 colleges, 36 academic departments, 9 Chairs and 2 Centers of Excellence, and several endowed chairs. With a student body coming from almost every Tennessee county, 44 states, and 59 foreign countries, MTSU's enrollment is in excess of 20,000. Approximately 1,700 comprise the staff of the University. The main campus covers approximately 500 acres and 112 buildings. As the
University grew, the service needs of the University grew. In 1994, the
Physical Plant changed its name to Facilities Services. Why? Because
Facilities Services is about service, and the name was changed to reflect
that. Each unit comprising Facilities Services makes a real
contribution to the learning environment at MTSU.
